Eyewise® provides a full 20mg of lutein (pure, free-form) per tablet, making our product one of the strongest available.

It also provides bilberry, blackberry and grapeseed, all well known plant polyphenols, as concentrated extracts. Plus the mineral zinc and the B vitamin riboflavin, both of which are known to contribute to the maintenance of normal vision and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Lutein is a yellow carotenoid that is not made in the body, and so it has to be obtained from leafy green vegetables in the diet. In plants lutein is produced to help protect the cell contents from damage by sunlight. Our bodies are able to use lutein in the same way as it is deposited in the macula where it filters out the harmful wavelengths in sunlight that can damage the delicate light receptor cells of the macula.

Research has shown that eating diets that are low in lutein can result in diminished levels of lutein in the macula. To correct this you should try to include leafy green vegetables in your diet, or failing this it is advisable to take a lutein supplement.

Lutein is a carotenoid with reported anti-inflammatory properties. A large body of evidence shows that lutein has several beneficial effects, especially on eye health. In particular, lutein is known to improve or even prevent age-related macular disease which is the leading cause of blindness and vision impairment.

One study found a 31–51% decreased risk of cataract development when participants' diets included 1.6–2.2 mg of riboflavin per day, compared to . 08 mg per day ( 25 ). Health authorities recommend consuming 1.1–1.3 mg of riboflavin per day. It's usually easy to achieve this amount, as many foods are high in riboflavin.

Zeaxanthin presence in eyes is relevant as they have been shown to protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. In addition, zeaxanthin has been shown to protect against oxidative stress in different tissues as well as systemic inflammation.

Bilberry has been suggested as a treatment for retinopathy (damage to the retina) because anthocyanosides appear to help protect the retina. Bilberry has also exhibited protective effects against macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.

The antioxidants found in grape seeds may be particularly good at protecting our eyes from the damage wrought by free radicals. In a Korean laboratory study published in Current Eye Research in 2012, grapeseed extract was found to be able to 'rescue' retinal cells from oxidative damage.
